How Our ESS Switches Without a Power Gap

Available for cabinet and containerized ESS configurations

Load sharing, automatic switchover, and silent night operation — the EMS and STS logic that keeps your rig running with zero interruptions.

< 20 ms

Static Transfer Switch — solid-state switchover between cabinets, genset, or grid, faster than any mechanical breaker and invisible to your rig.

Load Sharing

Intelligent EMS — the Energy Management System monitors every battery cluster’s state of charge in real time and balances load across all cabinets automatically.

Zero Downtime

Automatic Recharge — depleted cabinets drop into standby and recharge during low-load windows. The rig never sees a power gap.

MULTI-CABINET PARALLEL OPERATION

When One Cabinet Depletes, the Others Take Over

On larger sites, two to five cabinets are paralleled as one system. All cabinets share the load together — not one at a time. When any cabinet’s state of charge drops below the 15–20% threshold, the EMS automatically redirects its load to cabinets with higher charge, and the depleted unit enters standby / recharge mode.

Step What Happens Duration
1 All cabinets share the load together (load-sharing mode via master-slave busbar) Normal operation
2 EMS monitors each cabinet’s state of charge in real time Continuous
3 A cabinet’s SOC drops below 15–20% → EMS redirects its load to higher-SOC cabinets < 20 ms via STS
4 Depleted cabinet enters standby / recharge mode —
5 No rig shutdown, no manual intervention, no power gap —
ESS ↔ DIESEL GENSET HANDOVER

Hybrid Mode: Seamless Handover, Silent Nights

In hybrid mode the ESS is the primary power source and the diesel genset stays off. When the cabinet’s state of charge falls below 15%, the EMS starts the genset and the STS transfers the load in under 20 ms — then, once the cabinet reaches 60% SOC, the system hands back to the ESS and the genset shuts down again.

Step What Happens Duration
1 ESS supplies 24-h power; genset on standby, engine off Normal operation
2 ESS SOC drops below 15% → EMS sends start signal to genset < 5 sec genset start
3 STS transfers load from ESS to genset < 20 ms
4 Genset runs and recharges the ESS through the PCS (bidirectional) 3–4 hours
5 ESS reaches 60% SOC → STS transfers back; genset shuts down < 20 ms
6 ESS resumes primary supply; genset off again Normal operation
TRANSFER TIME SUMMARY

The Rig Never Sees a Power Gap

Event Transfer Time Rig Impact
Cabinet-to-cabinet (parallel mode) < 20 ms (internal busbar) None — seamless
ESS → diesel genset < 20 ms + 3–5 sec genset start None — STS bridges the gap
Diesel genset → ESS < 20 ms None — seamless
Grid → ESS (on grid failure) < 20 ms None — seamless

20 ms is 1/50th of a 50 Hz cycle — far below the ride-through time of any VFD or motor controller on a drilling or workover rig. The rig never sees a power interruption.

QUICK ANSWERS

Three Questions, Straight Answers

How long does it take to recharge a cabinet?

From a 500 kW diesel genset, a full recharge takes 3–4 hours during low-load periods; at the maximum PCS rate from the grid, about 2.4 hours.

Do the cabinets discharge one at a time or together?

Together. Load-sharing is the default — all active cabinets discharge simultaneously, and a depleted unit drops off automatically. Sequential mode is available when you want to keep certain cabinets as a strategic reserve.

How much diesel can we actually save?

60–80% in an ESS + diesel hybrid, and 70–80% — up to 90–95% in near-fully-renewable configurations — when PV is added.
