The bad news: a wrong tool selection is worse than no attempt. An overshot run for a spear job, or a grapple matched to the wrong casing weight, can push the fish deeper or damage the wellbore. Step 0: Diagnose Before You Run

Die collars — recover smooth fish by external die-cutting engagement.

Overshot vs. Spear vs. Jar: The Decision Rule

A grapple matched to 7″ 26# does not work on 7″ 29# — the ID difference is under a tenth of an inch, and that’s exactly the point. The tool has to grip that fish exactly, or it slips under load and the fish is lost deeper.
